  1. Catalogue for ATOPOLIS

Mons 2015 commissionned Wiels to organise a large exhibition. Curated by Dirk Snauwaert and Charlotte Friling, this exhibition focuses on topics related to the utopia of the city, the mutability of language, and the metissage of populations in the contexte of Mons-Borinage, between relics of heavy industry and new technologies. It is strongly connected to the writings of Edouart Glissant. Editor (SIC) (Raphaël Pirenne and Sébastien Bizet) was on charge of the edition. I was mandated to design the catalogue. Graphic decisions can be summarised by:

    - Structure: the book is structured on two parts: documents to contextualise the content, and artworks of the represented artists. A text of Dirk Snauwaert articulate those two parts.

    - Open language. The fonts used for the catalogue are free and open source. Inknut Antika and Playfair Display are the result of the reseach of Erik Sorensen, at the master of typography in Reading University. Blegika is the font developped by Pierre Huyghebaert for the work of Vincent Messeen at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Those fonts are released under open licence, which allows you to use, modify and redistribute them.

    - Typographic grid follows simple rules such as: French is on north hemisphere of the pages, english on the south hemisphere, allowing to harmonise languages without ambiguities. Captions are treated like titles of books, allowing a interpretative perspective on every documents.

    - Between parts, separating pages were designed using complex algorithm, to create experimental lettering reflecting the poetry, randomnes, beauty and technology of langage.

  2. Visual Identity for EDEN Charleroi

The city of Charleroi carries a heavy controversial negative image, related to its industrial past and its relative poverty. When the regional cultural center Eden asked to re-create their image, it had to be taken as implicated and participative. Through constant discussions and debates, the starting point was to define what visual culture eden should relay. Strongly conscious of the social role of culture in such a context, with all its paradoxal outcomes, Eden wants to push the ambitions of the positive aspect of life in a wounded city. The idea is to emphasise the positive, via local amateur photographers.

Here is an extract sent to the photographers:

    2 fonts were created:

    - DIN EDEN: a condensed version of the OSP DIN. Headline font title, combining industrial ingeneer forms with strong visual impact of theatre posters letterning tradition.

    - Liberation Eden: Open license Liberation font was reskinned using the Replica tricks: squarrish cutted formes.

Those 2 fonts are released under SIL open license.

  3. Posters for CAVE 12

Poster are influenced by a wide range of visual culture elements

This project is to support concert club Cave12 by doing posters for each concert they organise. Their dense and courageous program provides safe place for the fragile ecosystem of experimental music. All those posters are drawn with inkscape, an open source vector drawing application. 3 years, 300 posters.
